I posted last week about research that shows older treatments appear to work the best for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For diarrhea predominant IBS, or IBS-D, the treatment traditionally used includes peppermint and antispasmodics.
Since I suffer from IBS-D, I decided to try this out. I went to a local health food store and picked up some peppermint capsules and have been taking 1 capsule, twice a day. This personal experiment is only a week old so far, but things are going very well. It may be that I am in one of those good periods, and if you also have IBS you know what I am talking about.
As for antispasmodics, the research reported that scopolamine was the most effective. However, scopolamine is only available in the U.S. with a prescription.
I have been doing some more research and I have found a product that contains peppermint and natural antispasmodics. It is called IBS Suppress.
I have ordered IBS Suppress from Amazon, as they appear to have the best price.
Here are some testimonials from the IBS Suppress website:
I LOVE your product!!! I stumbled upon IBS Suppress very randomly, by a drugstore that was going out of sale. They were closing out a bunch of stuff and I saw these, just by chance. I’ve been a horrid suffererer of IBS for years now, and nothing has helped. I’m so grateful for your alternative – they truly help me. I take one when I feel an IBS attack coming on… and oh my god, they really work. I look at other alternatives, and they charge so much. I can’t afford 150 a month just for IBS tablets and what not. But you guys have a product that I see results with. Thank you so much.” – A, Minnesota
I find peppermint tea to be quite helpful. . . . I also carry IBSuppress with me. It is more portable, and helps me when I am running around… Good stuff.” – T, ibsgroup.org
This is also something I can relate to, because no matter what changes I make, there is always that fear and I never feel completely secure. And the holiday season is the worst–my family never understands why I can’t stuff my face like the rest of them! The one thing that has helped me was a product that I bought online called IBSuppress. I like that it’s chewable and I just like having something that I can keep in my handbag and take immediately when I feel the overtures of an episode and I’m away from home. All I know is that I just have to keep on living life and I don’t want IBS to get the best of me to the point where I’m afraid to leave my apartment!!!!” – N, ibsgroup.org
I like Activia too, or any probiotic for that matter. I just have to take it first thing in the morning before I eat my first meal of the day. When I’m away from home, I always take IBSuppress with me because I like to have something chewable on hand to stave off the symptoms of an impending attack!” – I, healingwell.com
After I have tried the product I will follow up with my own experience. If you have tried IBS Suppress, or want to, please leave a comment here with your personal experience.
